I'm sharing some pretty pictures of floss today! This is a rainbow of variegated floss from DMC. It changed colors on it's own while you stitch, kind of like striping sock yarn. It's kind of fun to use and comes in lots of colors. Although it's pretty, I don't actually use it often because I can't control where the colors land. (I'm kind of a color control freak I suppose. ;) I do like it for some projects though, I used it on my Mermaid Circle pattern for their hair and tails.
In general, variegated floss is one of those craft supply that I love looking at, but somehow it loses something when I actually put it to use. I feel that way about hand spun yarns too. I have a few balls of it that are so pretty to look at, but every time I try to make something out of it, I just don't like it. (call me strange. ;)
Here's some more special floss, metallic! It's really shiny and good for accents like stars. I don't use this too often either, however, I find it kind of hard to work with. It's slippery, the threads come untwisted easily and knots tend to undo themselves. I wish it came in more colors too. ;P
I tend to fall back to using standard floss for most of my projects, although these fancy ones certainly have potential. Have you ever used either of these? What do they work well for? I'd love to know what you think.

oh ....this makes my fingers just want to stitch!!!!! what a beautiful site!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean! I have a few balls of hand dyed variegated cotton yarn that just sits there and stares at me...I have never used it for anything but tying up packages. Hey what about some "mane & tail" accessories for your Ponies? Like hair extensions for toys!! I bet your girls would love new do's!!! Or what about making pom-poms out of it...tiny little ones to hang as party decorations! On a garland maybe?
ReplyDeletepretty! pretty!
ReplyDeleteI was always thinking of embroidering robots with the DMC metallic thread. Although, I get frusterated trying to use it because, like you said, they become untwisted easily which causes a mess! Not fun. :)
ReplyDeleteI think that is actually DMC Satin floss, the Lighte Effects (DMC's metallic line) looks a bit different.
ReplyDeleteI love variegated thread. After I use one I decide I'm going to variegate EVERYTHING from then on, but of courses that it's practical. I'm basically only used it for things where colour doesn't matter so much and I'm only using the one thread.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of these beautiful threads! I just bought some of the variegated threads in the top pic for a large garden angel design but haven't started yet. I'm hoping they will work for her long flowing dress, leaves and flower garland at her feet. They are perfect for your mermaids :-)
ReplyDeleteI love variegated and metallic threads too, and like you find using them tricky. But recently I've done a project using a yellow to brown to yellow variegated thread to embroider the outline of the African continent and it looked really cool. I've also used the metallic threads for the outline and design on some butterfly wings. Although that looked great too, it was a bit frustrating to use - I'm glad I didn't have much to do in it!
