Not when you are just using it as advertising. No. You pin other people and they pin you is how it works. You have lots of pins from other people which is valuable advertising and recommendation. That is how pinterest is meant to be used and frankly that's the reason I've just (earlier today) bought your doodle motifs book. But when people just single mindedly sell themselves, it's a bit off putting as it's all a bit relentless me me me and sell sell sell. It feels just a tad manipulative and mercenary. I mean where is the generosity to others? To have a single board for your own stuff would be fair enough and people do that but you apparently only like yourself! Pinterest is meant to be a celebration of work you admire enjoy and love. I know marketing is important but you can overstep the mark and turn people off rather than on too.I speak as an admirer and purchaser of your work. I like to like the people I buy from. I daresay people will disagree with me and say it gives people an opportunity of being updated with your latest stuff. Well, I would say that your blog is for that, and facebook and twitter. You can be over fed which isn't good for anyone. I would have enjoyed getting to know some of your tastes through your boards, it's a sharing kind of thing you know? I hate being made to feel that I am just a cash cow when I read a blog. I speak as someone who is very interested and admiring of your lovely work. When I am made to feel it is only my purse that is important, I switch off a little and shrink back. It happens all too often and just makes me feel cross and alienated. There is a balance. Katie
Wow, I'm sorry you feel that way towards me based solely on a singular incident on one website. Honestly, I am new to Pinterest (obviously) so I haven't had time to make inspiration boards yet, though that was my plan from the beginning. I'm still figuring it all out, and making boards of my own work was the easiest way for me to test it out and see how it all works. I hope to find the time to add boards with other people's work as well. I'm not at all narcissistic, I am very inspired by others and try to share as much as I can. Thank you just the same for picking up my book, I hope you'll enjoy it.
It actually did disapoint me, as I suggest. However I would like to say that I agree it would be foolish to come to critical conclusions about a person based on a single thing that is not to my taste. I can understand why you think I have done that, so I would like to temper that with saying I think I was generalising as much as making it personal to you but that is not clear. You are right, I do not know you. I AM somewhat disenchanted with quite a lot of online marketing strategies, manipulation and inflated egos and perhaps I allowed that to overflow too much in undeserved critisism. I apologise for being unfair. I am sure I will enjoy your book as I already know I admire your work. Please take down my posts if you would prefer to. Katie
Katie~Thanks for your honest response. I totally agree with you about marketing, I see more than enough of it myself. That is why I choose to keep advertising off of my blog. I've always found it difficult to market myself, it's hard to promote my work without feeling like that's my only purpose. But as a self employed artist, it's something I have to keep doing and try to find a middle ground. :)
Thanks for your comments! I love hearing from you! :)
